Bio
I am a memory collector and place creator. My art is a direct result of being torn from one homeland to another. Due to my displacement I have a heightened sense of place. I consciously create hybrid mythologies based on ancient and current knowledge and rituals of the world. I investigate my attachments to place, culture, identity and desire in order to free them. Curving the certainty of realities, I use my body and existence to perform elements of the evolution of creation through new forms of tradition surrounded by ceremonial gestures. I create documents and artwork with the organic substances of myself in order to achieve a sense of presence and impermanence.
Statement
In certain Andean regions of South America there are different cultures that live high in the mountains without running water. The water they do find is protected and honored as a precious gift of mother earth for purifying the body and soul, drinking and cooking. Creative living becomes essential to the existence of these cultures. Washing one's hair with the scarce water available is unheard of, and it is seen as a waste of the precious resource. Instead, all of the family members collect their urine in a vessel throughout the week. Later on, their excretions are used as the main liquid to wash their locks.
