Statement
We are a society of others. Drawn from the various cultures and religions throughout the world; we cohere under the guarantee of freedom that our Constitution holds. But our understanding of what freedom means is as diverse as our origins. While the Constitution guarantees that no religion will be held in official esteem or contempt; across the country there are battles over what is taught in our schools and written on our money. As a resident of the Bay Area it is easy to forget the struggle that goes on throughout the United States to find a balance between religious belief and the institution of our government. But, for many across America and indeed across the world there are no clear divisions between the rules of faith and of law. This conflation is clearly seen on our landscape when the proximity of objects begs the question; what does freedom really mean? What is self-evident may never stand for all. In our society of others, how do we decide who belongs?
